The van's next stop is a site devoted to the pairing of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Beru Whitesun Lars. Yes. The Sepia Side of the Force. Sands in the Hourglass by Aeshna hails from the years of hot and heavy speculation about the prequels, its plot springing from then-canon that Owen was Obi-Wan's brother. Beru, therefore, is Obi-Wan's sister-in-law and her marriage is in trouble. Two years after Order 66, Obi-Wan lives alone in his hut, heavily assaulted in the Force by the still-ongoing deaths of Jedi. He suffers, she comforts, they soothe each other in a very basic way. It's hot and heavy; Beru comes to life in a manner that you'd not thought before. It's a finely characterized adulterous soap opera, as its title suggests.

Summary: After almost a year of marriage, Emily Prentiss and Spencer Reid were just starting to think they were getting pretty good at it. But when an old friend pulls the team into a case in Dallas, TX, things get complicated fast. Specters from their past reappear, one murder leads to a series of crimes spanning an entire lifetime, and the UNSUB’s last stab at glory puts the whole team through the emotional wringer…and two newly-married agents through their most grueling trial yet.
Notes on story genre: I’m describing this fic as “casefile/romance.” The casefile portions of the story take place a couple of years from current canon. Those sections are interspersed with substantial flashbacks, some spanning several chapters, which depict how Reid and Prentiss went from friends and coworkers to husband and wife. The front half of the story is flashback-heavy, the back half is casefile-heavy. So be warned that the casefile portion of the story takes awhile to get going, and the first half is more about the relationship.

Why this must be read: This is an absolutely brilliant, mind-bending AU. After Tabula Rasa, the characters don't regain their memories; this is combined with an AU of This Mortal Coil (in which the RepliTeam don't die), and what emerges when these two plot threads are twined together is a really incredible exploration of identity -- of who we are, and what makes us us, and what aspects of our connections to other people can transcend memory and self (and what can't). This is a stunning look at Sheppard from the inside out, an in-depth examination of what makes him Sheppard and what happens when his concept of himself is turned inside out, what he keeps when his world is shattered and rebuilt. His story is woven in and out of the other characters' lives as they, too, try to understand their current situation, deal with what they've lost, and rebuild. I was amazed and impressed at the author's ability to juggle a large cast and complicated plot without losing track of anything, and to maintain the emotional power of the characters' ties in canon when they're having to rebuild those ties from the ground up. And the twists and turns kept surprising me, a rare thing to find in fanfic, where so many ideas have been worn down into predictability. If you want a novel-length fanfic that takes hold of you and won't let go, hopefully this one will suck you in as it did me.
